CHINESES LANTERN

Chinese lantern
the brightness within
a bee

dancing under bright twilight
buzzing factory worker

flowers by the door
nameless except for the color
of these blue days

straining listening to them
echoes of soft monotone

sheaves of grass
water that does not break
flows in ripples

not lost but merely transformed
tempestuous blue waters

late summer grasses
above their roots the seeds
nearly touching

the faintest touch of pale sun
seeds the earth with its beauty

barbed wire
the best berry bushes
double-thorned

suspended tasty treasures
often difficult to grasp

in foggy moonlight
blackberries float in cream
her nails are blue

poised on the tip of tongue
taste and deliciousness

BEACHCOMBER

missing the malls
on the ocean beach
she gathers shells

hears a twinkling merriment
rather than a clanging beat

afternoon wind
all the beachcomber’s words
blown out to sea

crosses the calm deep blue sea
vaporous exhalations

cold beach walk
on sun-warmed car seats
two sweatshirts

tangled into thousand strands
floral scented ocean breeze

high tide
the beach leaves a mark
in her book

watery apparitions
tattoo fine sandy pages

a special beach
I put a pebble in my mouth
before leaving

before the sugary sweets
a salty appetizer

smelling the light
on her tanned shoulder
home from the beach

in the breath of a new dawn
she feels light of yesterday

PLACING THE FLUTE

dancing on the beach
I jab a stick into the sky
to break up the blue

spiraling from formation
distracted blue butterfly

days so complete
words become the calls of birds
the high tide wind

found genuine happiness
the air is sweet with flowers

placing the flute
against her lips something
slips into place

forever enraptured by it
those pretty pale little fingers

I’m not old
all night my eyes have held
the ancient stars

caught a fleeting glimpse of heaven
in her intoxicating eyes

wind perfumed
from a woman’s shoulder
desert night

a benediction from her skin
as a faint quiver in the air

moon white water
lovers in the secret cove
Saturday night

being very secretive
whispering only love talk

SONORA DESERT

desert ways
branching all over
cholla cactus

gold and silver chandeliers
admitting natural light

overcoming rocks
a stream of cacti
slowly spreading

bursting with dazzling color
fiery blooms of yesterday

alone and asking
to be touched
teddy bear cholla

emotionlessly observes
the smile from a passerby

writing
desert poems
pencil cholla

scribbling feverishly out
new kind of epic poems

desert sunset
cholla cactus sticks
to the light

quickly discarded relics
founded by the drifting birds

among dune grass
silver bleached logs
and a perfect day

under the stars spread out before us
lights burn brighter than candles

BREAKFAST

early morning rain
the dry sound inside the cabin
of oatmeal cooking

sweet and succulent this bowl
potent source of nourishment

flood waters crest
someone by the river puts water
in a coffee pot

during metamorphosis
ice morphs to liquid twilight

breakfast coffee
the excitement of an ocean
in my cup

in safe drinking water
colors of a rainbow

pale spring sunshine
spread over breakfast toast
quince jelly

golden-wedded couple
smiling at each other

beating egg yolks
two yellow butterflies
twist in the fog

excessive entanglement
the finest gossamer wings

threads of smoke
breakfast fires of neighbors
tied together

surprised, gracious welcoming
easy camaraderie

SPRINGTIME WITH JANE

rippling grass
wind moves up the hill
light waves

a cycle of escalation
because of the slightest mishaps

forgotten brook
running the centuries down
locked in rock

ecosystem conundrum
under investigation

floating clouds
down from the mountain
a puddle of rain

prevent ants from climbing out
this immovable body

white pussy willows
above a muddy swollen river
fat raindrops

many-legged centipedes
scurrying this way and that

flute melodies
across green ocean waves
spring meadows

hidden in the underbrush
cicada mating signals

beach diamonds
a new day crystallized
in sunny surf foam

that sense of hopelessness
carried off by the tides

BEACH DIAMONDS

beach diamonds
a new day crystallized
in sunny surf foam

yesterday’s frayed newspaper
drifts into the churning seas

white pussy willows
above a muddy swollen river
fat raindrops

flowing down with the river
mountain cottontails scamper

light carried in my arms
apple blossoms from a neighbor
on my doorstep

delicate scent of blossoms
is thrown into the fresh air

Tai Chi on the beach
one gull watches
with outstretched wing

lively squawking collective
conduct mantra meditation

between the fields
a break in the evening mist
three lilac bushes

soft slivers of the blue sky
falling through my fingertips

shades of art deco
lying on the beach
abalone shells

distorted materials
in a collage painting
