PHOTOSHOPPING BUSON’S CAMELLIA

pink little darling
stains with many colors
the glass polisher’s hand

OR

before the glass polisher –
pink little darling
unfurls with many colors

SUMMER SOLSTICE

this short night –
from a shallow well I scoop
a persimmon flower

solstice splits
between the peach halves
a red stone sun

within a short time
the touch of pale sun
around the sunflowers

within a short time
sprawling wildflowers
raise their heads

the touch of pale sun
pulsating with life
still invigorates

around the sunflowers
infinitesimal cosmic debris
stars twinkling in the sky

***
within a short time
sprawling wildflowers
raise their heads

within a short time
in the early dawn
a myriad of faint galaxies

sprawling wildflowers
sighing till daylight
taking their last breaths

raise their heads
dispersing morning dewdrops
drops of color pooling where they stand

***
the touch of pale sun
momentarily invigorates
the wildflowers

the touch of pale sun
lost in the dusk
golden butterfly

momentarily invigorates
twittering twilight early bird
entire summery world

the wildflowers
clumsily knocking into each other
all the time

***
around the sunflowers
the dim light of the stars
butterflies in the meadow

around the sunflowers
scattered fragrant leaves
a sea of fallen stars

infinitesimal cosmic debris
lolling in the breeze
shifts between land and sea

stars twinkling in the sky
billions of years passed
the air still filled with the perfume of promise

BUSONKI TROIKU

these first few snowflakes
passing out of the darkness
mark hours of sorrow

these first few snowflakes
spiraling in winter sky
fills abandoned bowl

passing out of the darkness
white slivers of hope
scattering haphazardly

mark hours of sorrow
shifting within twilight hours
yesterday’s remnants

FOREGONE CONCLUSION

before the white chrysanthemum
the scissors hesitate
a moment

calligraphy of geese
against the sky —
the moon seals it

(C) Yosa Buson (Tr. Robert Hass)

foregone conclusion

against the sky –
a moment
of fleeting beauty

against the sky
snowy squadron
soars through faint rays of dawn

a moment
orphaned blossoms
perform death dance

of fleeting beauty –
white chrysanthemums
fading to black

adaptation

unruly winds
scattering white petals
against massive sky
lands softly upon sands –
hieroglyphs forecasts future

unruly winds
stirs chrysanthemum limbs
orphaning blossoms

scattering white petals
forge fragile origami
within calloused hands

against massive sky
seasoned petals
perform death dance

lands softy upon sands
summer’s last blossoms –
fleeting beauty

hieroglyphs forecasts future
in accordance with time –
adapting frequently
