BREATHING SILENCE

alone on the beach
only the cries of seaguls –
breathing silence

© Chèvrefeuille

alone on the beach
I shall walk into the blackness
to meet with Death

only the cries of seagulls –
are easily ignored
these birds that cry out in sorrow

breathing silence
on this moonless night
I am soon to be forgotten

HEAT WAVES

heat waves
bringing to the desert
an ocean view

© Jane Reichhold

heat waves
unexpectedly depart
with a high death toll

bringing to the desert
awakening elixir –
minute droplets suspended in the air

an ocean view
a mirage in the desert
soon to disappear

SUMMER SOLSTICE

this short night –
from a shallow well I scoop
a persimmon flower

between the peach halves
a red stone sun

within a short time
the touch of pale sun
around the sunflowers

within a short time
sprawling wildflowers
raise their heads

the touch of pale sun
pulsating with life
still invigorates

around the sunflowers
infinitesimal cosmic debris
stars twinkling in the sky

***
within a short time
sprawling wildflowers
raise their heads

within a short time
in the early dawn
a myriad of faint galaxies

sprawling wildflowers
sighing till daylight
taking their last breaths

raise their heads
dispersing morning dewdrops
drops of color pooling where they stand

***
the touch of pale sun
momentarily invigorates
the wildflowers

the touch of pale sun
lost in the dusk
golden butterfly

momentarily invigorates
twittering twilight early bird
entire summery world

the wildflowers
clumsily knocking into each other
all the time

***
around the sunflowers
the dim light of the stars
butterflies in the meadow

around the sunflowers
scattered fragrant leaves
a sea of fallen stars

infinitesimal cosmic debris
lolling in the breeze
shifts between land and sea

stars twinkling in the sky
billions of years passed
the air still filled with the perfume of promise

NIGHTINGALE

to listen,
fine not to listen, fine too…
nightingale

© Chiyo-Ni (1703-1775)

to listen,
moments of deep stillness
cherry petals falling

fine not to listen, fine too…
cherry blossom rain
petals falling from their tree

nightingale
and singing frogs –
a score of dulcet tones

PINK SAKURA BLUSH

pink sakura blush
spring’s kimono falls to earth
silk snatched by a breeze

© Kim R. Russell (2017)

pink sakura blush
in a mist of floating clouds –
pink fireworks in sky

spring’s kimono falls to earth
so silky and soft
like a handful of blossoms

silk snatched by a breeze
create a dancing pink puppet
making children laugh

WHITE VALLEY CLOUDS

after the rain
breathing deeply
white valley clouds

© Jane Reichhold (Taken from: “A Dictionary of Haiku”)

after the rain
on the grass –
rainbow droplets

breathing deeply
the smell of wildflowers
as they begin to wither

white valley clouds
meet in a kiss
with blatant blue sky
